Many consider the second Monday in October to be an important day, it’s the “Day of Remembrance” of Christopher Columbus – aka Columbus Day. What many don’t know is Columbus Day 2013 falls on the 14^th of October which so happens to also be “World Standards Day.”

This coincidence seems slightly ironic, since “Columbus” is such a “standard” name for cities, states and countries around the world. There are 22 such places named for good’ ole Chris.

What is ‘World Standards Day?’

World Standards Day is celebrated internationally each year on 14 October.  The day honors the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organizations such as the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), National Aerospace Standard (AIA / NAS), United States Military Standards or MIL-SPEC, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Deutsche Institute for Standards (DIN), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
